Downtown New York City in the early 90s was a magical place and time for rock music, with a burgeoning scene and hip clubs galore. Striding like conquering giants into this fertile milieu came THE PINEAPPLES, whose gigs inspired the reverence of fans and other musicians alike. They took the scene by storm, sharing the stages of CBGBs, Maxwell’s, the Knitting Factory and Brownie’s with the likes of Hole, Helmet, Lunachicks, B.A.L.L, White Zombie – hell, even Juliana Hatfield.
The boys caught the attention of the British press with the Kramer produced Kokopop single All For What. A subsequent release on Placebo led to a tour with The Drop Nineteens. By 1995, the Pineapples had disbanded. However, a string of 21st Century releases on their own Wicked Ape label led to more great reviews and select shows at the LES staple Arlene's Grocery and most recently in Woodstock promoting the second full length album, the excellent Incommunicado. The Pineapples are back with a new ep - Done Looking Around!
Big Takeover - Fall 2023
by Michael Toland
"The Pineapples’ second wind keeps on blowing with this EP-sized follow-up to 2021’s exceptionally fine Incommunicado. As usual, the New York quartet flexes its muscles in a tried-and-true, melodic guitar rock style, ’90s edition. (The band comes by it honestly and organically, having released a series of cool singles back in the day.) The hard rocking “Om” rips pretty decisively, while “Bright City” and the title track extract a lot of soul out of midtempo melodies. Best of all, however, is finale, “Blood and Bone,” a soaring, super-catchy anthem that takes a pal to task for participating in the January 6 insurrection."
"The Pineapples have existed for three decades. Incommunicado shows them hitting a new stride!"
- The Big Takeover - December 2021
"You’d be forgiven for not having clamored
for a reunion—or, hell, even remembering the name, unless you were either on the Amerindie ‘zine scene
back in those admittedly pre-goldrush alt-rock daze, or a regular consumer of the UK weeklies, which momentarily championed the Pineapples. And not without cause, either—this was a heavy, Prog/punk noize as cool as it got, deservingly aligned by the critics with the likes of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. " - Fred Mills - Blurt 2017
Fred Mills - Blurt Review - 2017
"
Amazingly, there’s still an enticingly familiar early ‘90s vibe here, with angular leads bolstered by brutal power chords, vocals that slip easily between yearning reverie, loutish growls, and heavenly harmonies, and a rhythmic assault that could power its way through any stylistic decade you’d care to name. From the post-grunge glissandos of “Red King” and part-dreamscape/part-overdrive alt-pop that is “Summergreen,” to the anthemic, immeasurably hookish power pop of “Reason to Live” and shuddery, wah-wah-powered, psychedelic anthem “Please Don’t Kill Doctor Strange” (yes, there are at least a few unapologetic comics fans in the band), there’s a lot going on with this slab o’ heaviness.
Did someone mention “slab”? We’ve got a shiny black 180-gram piece o’ 12” wax in hand, with a neon-tinted inner sleeve and a nude pineapple- bearer gracing the outer sleeve, so really, what are you waiting for, a goddam jpeg or something?"
Once again, spewed from The Wicked Ape, now with new drummer Art Deianni and a huge sound - new music in the form of Incommunicado . Mixed and engineered by Justin and Mark of Sonelab MA
